Building a new home is an exciting experience! In the midst of the excitement, there are several decisions to be made that will impact the outcome of your project - including your visit to the Design Center.
If you're working with a large home builder, it's likely you'll be given a three or four hour window at their interior design studio to make all your design selections. It's a unique approach to interior design because typically, clients are given ample time to source materials, test products, and make their final selections. With national home builders, you're being introduced to the materials and making your final selections within a span of a few hours. Keep the following tips in mind to make your trip to the Design Center a success!
Ask for the Design Options in Advance
Ask your sales associate for the design options prior to your appointment. Their list might not include all available options, but it will give you an idea of the different tiers. Select your favorite products in each tier so you're prepared with backup options!
Consider Natural Light
Before your appointment, spend some time on your lot considering the position of the home and how the sun will shine on it at different times of the day. Interior design is largely impacted by natural light! For example, a light and airy color palette can look great with hints of natural light, but it might not be the best fit in an area with few windows.
Outlets, Outlets, Outlets!
This is your chance to select the placement for additional electrical outlets! Planning to mount a TV? Add an outlet halfway up the wall to keep your cords hidden. Thinking of a floor lamp in your living room? Add an outlet on the floor.
A few other considerations:
Exterior outlet placement for Christmas lights
Avoid having to cross electrical cords over sidewalks and other high traffic outdoor areas
GFCI outlet for a garage refridgerator and freezer
Spend Where it Matters
Every option in your new home is important, regardless of the pricetag, but some are harder to correct than others. Don't be afraid to invest more into certain design options than others - it could make things easier down the road.
At Highview Interiors, we always recommend investing in the following options:
Frameless glass shower doors
High quality carpet padding (even if your top layer carpet is standard)
Upgraded staircase balusters and treads (avoid half-walls!)
We'll also advise you on areas that be adjusted later down the road:
Kitchen cabinet color
Recent clients of ours saved $11,000 by selecting the standard cabinet option in their new home! After move-in, they hired a professional painter to upgrade the cabinets to their desired color.
Wainscoting
Light fixtures
Hardware (door knobs, cabinet pulls, etc.)
